Garlic Harvest Time

1. Garlic Bulb Harvest

Time Range:

Autumn-sown garlic: Usually late May to mid-June of the following year.

Spring-sown garlic: Usually mid-July to August.

Marks of Maturity (Very Important!):

Leaf Status: The older leaves at the bottom gradually turn yellow and wither, and the upper leaves also begin to fade and turn yellow, but the 3-4 leaves in the middle of the plant still retain some green.

Pseudostem Status: The garlic stalk (pseudostem) is no longer hard, becoming soft and flexible when lightly pressed, and not easily broken.

Ultimate Verification: Randomly dig up a few garlic bulbs in the field to check. When the garlic stalk (outermost layer of skin) becomes as thin as paper, its color begins to turn purplish or dark, and the outline of the garlic cloves is clearly distinguishable, it is the optimal harvest time.

2. Garlic Scape (Garlic Sprout) Harvest

Time: Approximately 15-25 days before harvesting the garlic bulbs.

Marks of Maturity: The bud (the small hat-like part at the top) of the garlic scape begins to turn white and enlarge.

The garlic scape itself is curved into a "hook" shape, and when viewed from the leaf sheath opening (where the garlic scape emerges), about 10-15 centimeters of the garlic scape are exposed.
